ግእዝ / ትግርኛ/ ኣምሓርኛ አብ ኡቡንቱ ብኸመይ ትጽሕፍ ፧ Enabling Geez / Amharic / Tigrinya typing in Ubuntu using ibus-m17-n This method was tested in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial). The method requires installing ibus-m17n and adding it to the Text Entry list in Ubuntu. m17n allows ibus to input non latin characters. The steps follow: [1] install ibus-m17n $ sudo apt-get install ibus-m17n or by visiting the ubuntu software center https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/ibus-m17n/ click the button ‘available on the software centre’ and follow the installation instructions. [2] add m17n engine
for ibus in Ubuntu's Text Entry. - go to dash ,
search for ‘text entry’ and hit enter, a window similar to the following figure will pop up. under input source to use: The language of current input method is listed, such as English(US) to add Ge'ez (Amharic) script - click the add button (+) find Amharic (sera(m17n))(IBus) [note that there is also ‘Amharic’ but we don’t select that one] (if you can not find ‘amharic (sera(m17n))(IBus)’, please close and open the Text Entry again or logout and open the Text Entry window again. - select Amharic (sera(m17n))(IBus) and click add [after adding the input method, you will see a list similar to the above figure]
For easy access of the input methods, check ‘show current input source in the menu bar’
